I was psyched when my friends at the Anchorage Press, designer Beth Skabar and editor Victoria Barber, asked me to guest illustrate this week’s cover of the Anchorage’s alternative weekly. The cover story was about how drones will soon be flying the Alaska skies to count wildlife, monitor the Alaska pipeline and do research.
One aspect of the story was over the controversy of drones and how the unmanned aircraft technology tends to make some people uncomfortable and worry about privacy. We decided to draw inspiration from old movie posters, big brother and George Orwell.
I started with sketches of a polar bear looking up at a drone with some Alaska landscape in the background. But my creative process landed in the viewpoint of the drone focused on a polar bear and the drone’s reflection in the bear’s eyes.
